As CES 2014 draws to a close, we’re focusing on the top revelations that this year brought with it. It’s been a busy one, some gadgets built on the excitement of last year with new fixes and developments to existing products – but this year, one thing rang true, this is the golden age of startups and a new and exciting future has been paved for connected electronics.
The top five trends that have got the most attention across the event are as follows:
- The curved TV – Samsung and LG presented their models of curved TV which were received well with conversations surrounding creative ways to make the most of the new look and feel. What did you think? Do you think this is a new age of viewing experiences?
- Ultra HD – Sony, LG and Vizio revealed their versions of the clearer than ever visual display. It’s true that whilst the whole HD thing isn’t new, this CES we definitely witnessed vast product developments and improvements
- Wearables – this was by far the running theme across the period and welcomed lots of presentations from eager startups who were keen to showcase their prototypes and products. Voyce particularly impressed with a high-tech dog collar that served as a tracker for your furry friend’s vital signs and performance. It also incorporated a data syncing capability allowing pet owners to retrieve data on their computer, tablet or smartphone.
- Your car – the next generation of car tech came to fruition this year with what seemed like an endless list of devices working closely with automotive tech to ensure that your devices and your cars will eventually become life-long partners. Hyundai Genesis started with the click of a smartphone or tablet app, and the dashboard has been transformed into a futuristic hub of tips, music (courtesy of Pandora) and even a search engine with Bing
- The Connected Home – with the influx of new products came a breath of fresh air for connected devices. Kitchen appliances that adjust their temperature or light with a remote smartphone app to an electronic toothbrush from Kolibree that tells you how well you’re brushing.
If hardware startups needed a forum to flourish in – CES 2014 was most certainly it. ‘The success of companies like thermostat Nest and smart watch Pebble have paved the way for more experimentation. Crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo and Kickstarter allow hardware company founders to raise money for their vision when investors are too scared to take a chance on them. 3D printers let entrepreneurs prototype, mess up, and prototype again without breaking the bank.’ Source: http://pando.com/2014/01/09/consumers-love-the-startups-stuck-in-airless-ces-basement/
